I loved Mom’s doughnuts. She made cake doughnuts more often than raised doughnuts and both were wonderful.

Ingredients

 ¾ cup milk, scald

 ¼ cup sugar

 1 tsp salt

 ¼ cup butter

 ¼ cup warm water

 1 package yeast

 1 egg

 3 cups flour

Method

1. Scald milk.

2. Place sugar, salt and butter in large bowl.

3. Pour warm milk over and stir until margarine melts.

4. Cool.

5. Combine warm water with yeast.

6. When milk mixture is lukewarm, add yeast mixture.

7. Blend in egg and 1 1/2 cups flour.

8. Beat until smooth.

9. Add enough additional flour (1 1/2 cups or more) to make stiff dough.

10. Knead on floured board 8 to 10 minutes.

11. Let rise until double in bulk.

12. Punch down and roll out on lightly floured board.

13. Let rise 1 hour.

14. Use pancake turner to carefully put in hot oil or grease.
