The recipe card this is written on is very old and very yellowed. The name Margaret is in the upper right hand corner and her last name is torn off the card. It appears to be Grandma Veit’s hand writing that has added lemon flavoring to the recipe. Margaret did not mention that in her ingredient list.
Ingredients
2 eggs, or 4 yolks
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons soft shortening
¾ cup sour milk, (buttermilk)
3 cups sifted flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp vanilla
lemon flavoring
Method
1. Beat the eggs (or egg yolks) until light.
2. Add ingredients in order.
3. Chill 1 hour or overnight.
4. This makes a small batch, so I double this.
5. Roll out on a floured board, cut with doughnut cutter and fry in hot, deep fat.
