This is from the May 7, 1960 Dakota Farmer. They had published an entire page of frosting recipes. I found this one to be the most interesting, so included it because there are so many doughnut recipes included in Mom’s recipe file. What I found even more interesting was the reverse side of the recipe page. There, I found an article entitled “Taking ‘Irks’ Out Of IroningDay.” Here are some great ideas you may want to use:

“When you iron, the clothes basket preferably should be on your right (unless you are lefthanded) and at nearly the same height as the board. This reduces reaching and bending. Also within easy reach should be a flat surface such as a table on which finished items can be placed. It’s wise to iron a sheet first. Then do other flat work and folded clothing, such as shirts and underwear, and lay these on the folded sheet which can be used as a tray to carry everything away in one trip.”

Excuse me, I have to go and iron some underwear. Where’s the starch? Now, let’s get to the recipe.

Ingredients

 ½ cup butter, softened

 3 cups powdered sugar

 2 tablespoons buttermilk

 ½ teaspoon vanilla

 3 tablespoons coffee

 1 egg yolk

Method

From the Dakota Farmer: This is good on cake, too. Combine softened butter, powdered sugar, buttermilk, vanilla, coffee and egg yolk. Mix well for several minutes. If chocolate icing is desired, add cocoa or melted chocolate squares.
