• 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 ½ cups sifted cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 2 ounces red food color
  • Frosting
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
Cake:1. Add vinegar to soda.
2. Cream shortening and sugar.
3. Add eggs one at a time.
4. Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt together.
5. Mix milk, vanilla and food color.
6. Add alternately with flour mixture.
7. Begin and end with dry ingredients.
8. Stir in soda and vinegar.
9. Bake 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes in a 2 layer cake pan.
Frosting: Makes enough to frost a 2 layer cake
1. Cook flour and milk, stirring until thick.
2. Set aside to cool.
3. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
4. Stir in vanilla.
5. Gradually add cooled milk mixture, beating well after each addition.
