Burnt Sugar Cake (Mother’s)

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter

3 eggs

3/4 cup cold water

2 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

vanilla

Burnt sugar

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup water

Directions:

1. Cream butter and sugar.

2. Add yolks of eggs beaten, then cold water and 2 cups flour alternately.

3. Beat for 5 minutes.

4. Add whites of eggs and 1/2 cup flour with baking powder and 3 tablespoons burnt sugar and vanilla.

6. Burn 1 cup sugar until brown and add 1/2 cup water.

Notes:

Trivia:

Burnt is chiefly a British term, as opposed to burned. I was curious, so I did a little research.
